About Betampona Strict Nature Reserve

Betampona Strict Nature Reserve is located in the Atsinanana region of eastern Madagascar and covers a primary lowland rainforest area. This protected reserve extends over approximately 29 square kilometers and represents some of the last remaining stands of lowland tropical rainforest in the region. Its geography is characterized by rugged terrain with hilly forested slopes, intersected by several small streams that contribute to the rich hydrological system of the area. The reserve serves as a vital refuge for many species endemic to Madagascar, including numerous rare and endangered animals such as the critically endangered greater bamboo lemur, various species of chameleons, and a host of unique birds and reptiles. Vegetation within Betampona is dense and varied, with towering canopy trees, abundant epiphytes, and thick understory layers.

Established in 1927, Betampona is one of Madagascar's oldest protected areas and is especially significant because it has been spared from extensive human agricultural activity, allowing natural processes to continue relatively undisturbed. Although public access is limited to reduce human impact, scientific researchers and conservationists frequently visit the reserve to monitor biodiversity and ecosystem health. Visitors interested in guided tours can arrange access through local environmental organizations, providing opportunities to experience the forest’s unique wildlife and plant life first-hand. While recreational hiking is very limited compared to other protected areas, Betampona offers exceptional wildlife viewing and photographic opportunities owing to its rich endemic species assemblages. The preserve also plays an important role in regional conservation programs focused on sustainable environmental management and species recovery within Madagascar's fragile ecosystems.
